Life would be meaningless and dull without colors and the same holds true for homes. Different colors affect your mental state in different ways, since some can be very energetic and inspiring, while others can be serene and relaxing. While some colors fill you with positivity, a few can make you feel sad and depressed too! So, using the right colors and the ideal color scheme is essential if you wish to make your home beautiful as well as happy.

Do remember that what color will appeal to you might depend on your age, cultural background, social stature, religion, and lifestyle. Also, people feel cooler in a room with calm colors like blue and green, and warmer in a room with reds and yellows.

Meanings and uses of different colors

Red – It indicates love, lust, energy, power, strength, excitement, fire, and even masculinity in some cultures. When used in living or dining rooms, red can lend richness, stimulate conversations and improve energy levels. Excessive use of red can however increase heart rate and blood pressure.

Yellow – Warmth, optimism, sunshine, energy and brilliance are indicated by this hue. Yellow is perfect for dining rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, as it has a welcoming and energizing effect. But, use yellow moderately, or it can cause angry and frustrated feelings.

Green – As a symbol of life, green indicates growth, relaxation, recovery, balance, and youthfulness. This color is ideal for any room in the house usually, but especially great for living rooms and bedrooms, to induce tranquility, warmth and relaxation.

Blue – This hue represents sky, heaven, sea, calm, intelligence, freshness, but can also indicate sadness. Shades like aqua and turquoise also represent dreams and imagination. Light shades of blue can be used in the living room, bedrooms and bathrooms to create a relaxed, peaceful vibe. Darker shades should be avoided as they can induce sadness.

Black and white – Though black is considered to be negative or a bad omen in many cultures, it is often used with white to represent Yin and Yang. The combination is used in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and even bathrooms to represent sophistication, peace and simplicity. Or, you can liven up a black and white room with splashes of some bright hue like red, pink or green.

Orange – Bold and cheerful, this color represents sunset, autumn, spices, clay, prosperity, and energy. Orange can be used in moderation in gym rooms or nurseries, to induce excitement and energy. Avoid this in bedrooms.

Pink – Pale pink stands for softness, girlish charm, innocence, healthiness, and sweetness. Hot pink is associated with heat, passion, romance, feminism and courage.  Pinks are best suited for girls’ rooms, though pastel or soft shades can be used in bedrooms and living rooms too.

Purple – Indicating royalty, drama, sophistication mystery, magic and wisdom, purple is a color that should be used creatively. Its dark shades can be used for cushions or printed curtains, while the soft shades like lilac or lavender can be used on walls. Purple is best suited for bedrooms and study rooms.

Brown – As the color of earth, brown signifies security, home, wholesomeness, reliability, warmth, honesty and healing. Brown can be used in small amounts in living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms, when paired with white, beige, or soft grey. Too much of it can be overpowering.

So, use colors wisely. Light hues like whites or pastels can make your house look bigger on the outside and spacious on the inside. A mix of bright hues like red, yellow, orange, pink and green can liven up a nursery and lend both relaxation and energy. Avoid red and orange if you have heart problems and stay away from black, brown and deep blue if you are prone to depression. Finally, let nature inspire you when you color your home, as it is the best teacher!
